The Boiler Upgrade Scheme in Birmingham | £7,500–£9,000 Heat Pump Grant | Explained by an Installer
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a government grant towards replacing your heating with a heat pump. The standard rate is £7,500 for an Air Source or Ground Source heat pump. Homes heated by oil or LPG with no mains gas connection get £9,000 until 31 March 2027. The scheme is funded to 2029/30, it isn’t means-tested, and it isn’t a loan, nothing is repaid.
The part most people don’t realise, you never touch the money. The grant is claimed by your MCS-certified installer, in this case GreenGlow, and deducted from your quote before you pay a penny. If your installation costs £10,000, a larger house might pay £2,500, but a park home or mid-terrace often costs no more than the grant, so you pay £0. We handle the entire application with Ofgem.

Who qualifies
- You own the property (landlords and second-home owners included). If you rent, your landlord would need to apply, we can survey and design the system with their permission.
- The property is in England or Wales.
- You’re replacing a gas, oil, LPG or electric heating system with a heat pump.
- No income or benefits test, the grant isn’t means-tested.
- No EPC needed, if you don’t have one, we supply the alternative evidence Ofgem accepts.
- Most homes qualify, the quickest way to know is our 30-second checker or one phone call.
Who doesn’t qualify, social housing, most new builds, and homes already given government funding for a heat pump or biomass boiler. Earlier insulation funding does not count against you.

What you can get from the Boiler Upgrade Scheme on GOV.UK
What’s covered
The grant is towards the heat pump installation itself. It is not a voucher you spend elsewhere, and it cannot be claimed on a gas boiler. Typical covered work, the outdoor unit, cylinder, controls, commissioning and MCS certification. Radiator upgrades, oil-tank removal and extra electrical work sit outside the grant figure and appear as line items on your quote so you can see exactly what you are paying.
We apply to Ofgem as the MCS installer. You do not create an account, wait for a payment, or send the grant on to us. It is deducted before you pay.
Oil and LPG with no mains gas, £9,000 until 31 March 2027
If your home is heated by oil or LPG and has no mains gas connection, the grant is £9,000 instead of £7,500 until 31 March 2027. It applies to air source and ground source heat pumps. A home that has a mains gas connection gets the standard £7,500. Oil boiler replacement is the dedicated page for those jobs. Park homes and smaller homes can have nothing left to pay.

Why act now
The scheme is funded to 2029/30, so there’s no cliff-edge for most homes. The real deadline is for oil and LPG homes with no mains gas, the £9,000 rate is available until 31 March 2027. A survey, system design and the Ofgem application all take time, so booking early matters. More than 100,000 households have applied since the scheme opened in 2022 (Energy Saving Trust). We won’t put a countdown clock on this page, book the survey while there are slots before the cold weather.
